Who Is Christ?

Wayne Grudem, the author of “Christian Beliefs” described Jesus Christ in his first paragraph of this chapter. He said “In Jesus God and man became one person, a person unlike anyone else the world has ever seen or will ever see. Jesus Christ was, and forever will be, fully God and fully man in one person. And that one person changed the course of history forever”. Jesus Christ was 100% God and 100% human. This almost sounds much like the past chapter of “trinity”. It is something that is hard to believe but a truth we must learn to accept.

Jesus Christ is fully man. He was conceived in His mothers womb by the extraordinary work of the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 1:18 it says “Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary have been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit”. Now Jesus being born because of the works of the Holy Spirit may be hard to comprehend, but one thing is very apparent. Because Jesus was given birth from a human mother this establishes His humanity.

Jesus had a human body just like we did. Even as a child, he also grew and became strong. And as he matured, it says in Luke 2:52,  he “increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man”. He grew fatigued when he went on a journey, he was hungry when he fasted, and even when he was on the cross he said “I thirst” in John 19:28. So in all actuality Jesus’ body was in every aspect just like ours.

Jesus mind was like ours too. As a child He went through the learning process of talking, reading and writing and eating. In Luke 2:52 it lets us know that he “increased in wisdom” as he was getting older. Jesus also had and felt the many emotions that we feel every day. When His friend Lazarus died, he “wept”. When he prayed to God, he prayed “with loud cries and tears”. And before his crucifixion he said “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death” (Matthew 26:38).

Jesus had many traits like us but one. He did not have any sin. Paul described Jesus in 2Corinthians 5:21 as “him…who knew no sin”. Peter also says that Jesus “committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth”. It is very important that Jesus was fully human to provide as our compliant representative. His representative obedience is different from Adams representative disobedience. In Romans 5:19 it says “as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous”. Let’s just say, that if Jesus wasn’t 100% human, his duty in our place would be pointless. Because he is human, this also lets him be a mediator between God and men.

The Bible shows that Jesus Christ is fully God. The Greek translation of the term “Lord” means God. Therefore when the angels was proclaiming Jesus’ birth, they said “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). They were saying that the Lord God was born. Jesus was questioned in John 8:57-58 if he had seen Abraham. Jesus responded by saying “Before Abraham was, I am”. Even God claimed himself in Exodus 3:14 “I am who I am”. In Revelation 22:13 Jesus says “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end”. This is very comparable to what God said in Revelations 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega…who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty”. Jesus is worthy of our worship because he is also God. Paul says “God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knew should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess the Jesus Christ is the Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philemon 2:9-11).  If Jesus was not fully God he could not have bear the full price for sin. There wouldn’t be any legitimate payment for anybody’s sin.
