7. What is Man?

In the beginning, God created the plants, animals and one of the most important creations of all. He created man. In Genesis 1:27-28 tells us that He created man in the image of his own and he also blessed him.

God did not create us because he was lonely or wanting companionship. He created us so we can bring him glory. In Isaiah 43:7 God says “Everyone who is called by name… I created for my glory”. But what does giving God glory mean? Giving God glory means to give him great honor and praise, and we can do this in numerous ways.

Since we were created for Gods glory that means our vital goal in life should be to live for his glory. When we give God glory, our lives has purpose and significance. One of the ways that we can glorify God is by enjoying him. We do this by attending church, singing in his name and listening to his words. When we fully know God, joy is also found when knowing him and delighting in him. When we do this, we are giving him the praise and glory that he desires and deserves.

In Psalms 19:1 it shows us that all of Gods creations bring Him glory. But compared to all of God’s creation the main thing that makes us unique is because we were created in His image (Genesis 1:27). Being a creature in God’s image we were made to be like him. So the more we learn about God the more we understand about ourselves. And the more we understand about ourselves the more we understand about God. For instance, because we are creatures of moral, we have an inner sense of what is right and wrong. This is a indication of God’s perfect sense of right and wrong. We are also alike, because we are not only physical but spiritual creatures and God is a spirit.

The reason why image is somewhat damaged is because of sin. Sin disfigures our moral judgments and encumbers our likeness of God. But the good news is that Gods image is being restored. At the end of time we will become like Jesus Christ. In Corinthians 15:49 it says “just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven”. Because of Jesus we will ultimately be changed to imitate Gods image as we were proposed to do.

Being a creature of God’s image we also have responsibilities. We are His representatives on the earth. Through us, God has placed images of himself. God has told Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth” (Genesis 1:28). God wishes for His image to “fill the earth” so we can demonstrate all the places where he rules, which then brings Him the glory he wants and ought to have. God has also commanded Adam and Eve to “have dominion over… every living things that moves on the earth” he said this as if a king tells his representatives to care for his kingdom in a way that pleased him. Consequently, we should demonstrate care and respect for the earth and the Creator. We should have optimism and respect for the world God has assigned us with.
