What is the Resurrection?

Jesus Christ resurrection wasn’t just coming back from the dead. It was something more than that. When Jesus rose from the dead he began a new kind of human life in which he had a perfect body that cannot grow weary or die. Jesus’ new body was everlasting and perfect. But when he rose again, His disciples still “ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead” (Acts 10:41). He even told Thomas to touch his hands and sides. Jesus body was made of “flesh and bones” (Luke 24:39).

Accordingly, everyone that believed in Jesus for their salvation was born again through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We received a new future life like Jesus. Our bodies are not yet like His new body but our spirits have been made alive with new “resurrection power”. What is resurrection power?

Resurrection power helps us live the life that was first intended for us to live in. It gives us strength to overpower sin in our lives. Due to the resurrection we are now not “children of sin” but rather “dead to sin” (Romans 6:11). Even though we cannot acquire perfect sinless life, Paul explains that “sin will have no dominion” over us anymore. Sin cannot overcome us. Power from the Holy Spirit also contributes to the resurrection power we have been given.

Jesus’ resurrection also gives us a right standing before God. Because he paid for our penalty of sin, God has displayed an approval of Jesus’ work. Jesus did not have to remain dead because His work was completed. In Romans 4:25 it says that Jesus was “raised for our justification”. Also, in Hebrews 1:3 it says “After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high”. He was able to do so because His work was concluded.

In conclusion, since God raised the Lord he will also raise us up by his power. We will experience a resurrection of our own. Paul says in 1Corinthians 15:20, that in Jesus resurrection we can see a picture of what is to come for us. When the end of day arrives, and Jesus returns we all will be changed. Our earthly bodies will be replaced for an immortal one. When we are resurrected, we are going to have a new body just like the one that Jesus has.
