10. What is the Atonement?

The work that Jesus did during His life, and dying to earn our salvation is referred to as “atonement”. In the bible is clear of Gods faithful love and justice. In John 3:16, it says “For God loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”. God has put forward Jesus as propitiation, so that He can look kindly towards us. Someone had to take the penalty for the sins, and that person was Jesus. God showed his justice by having someone be punished for our sins, and He showed his love by giving His only Son to undergo that punishment.

God didn’t have to save any people whatsoever. But because of His love, He chose to save some of us. Once God put that verdict in His mind, Him being justice made it necessary for Jesus to live the life that he lived and die the death that he died. Was it necessary? Yes, it was. Without it, nobody would have ever had a chance to receive everlasting life. The efforts to do all the good works in the world would have been useless. Jesus had even said in Luke 24:26 “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Jesus knew himself that there was no other alternative way for God to save us. He had to suffer and die for our sins. Jesus’ blood was what secured the “eternal redemption” (Hebrews 9:12).

It was necessary for Christ to live a life of faultless obedience so that those positive qualities can be counted for us too. If He offered Himself only as sacrifice, we would only have limited salvation. We would be guilt free, but still be able to sin. This is why Paul said “by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19).  Through Jesus and His sinless life it became our righteousness.

In the chapter of “Who is Christ?” we learned that Christ was a human. Therefore he went through all variety of emotions that we feel. He lived a life of torment. He was “despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). He endured from sinners a great deal of “hostility against himself” (Hebrews 12:3). He also suffered when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. When Jesus was crucified he endured extreme pain and suffering. He expressed His agony when he said “My soul is sorrowful, even to death” (Matthew 26:38).

The result that Atonement brings is that he paid for the punishment we deserved. Therefore the wrath that was meant for us, he received. We were once children of sin and he freed us from the bondage. Because of His work we can get the greatest gift of everlasting salvation!
